Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: Page One

Cabo was a dream come true for Bruce- we went marlin fishing.  Striped marlin are indigenous off the Baja Peninsula in Mexico in an area known as Golden Gate Bank at an underwater sea mount.  By the time we arrived the fishing had dropped off somewhat, however thanks to the fantastic crew of Renegades Mike's boat we managed to land three striped marlin.  I got one in the boat and Bruce got two.  Bruce's was the largest at about 8.5 feet long and 130-150 pounds.  Mine was a bit smaller at 7 feet and 100-120 pounds and Bruce's last was about the size of mine- we never even pulled the fish into the boat; they were released unharmed.  Bruce even got a rooster fish named for the spiky dorsal fin- very cute.  The kids came a long for the ride and although it was quite choppy running out to Golden Gate Bank- Ben actually fell asleep on the way.  The kids were wonderfully encouraging yelling "Pull harder Daddy".  Many of the photos illustrate why marlin fishing is so popular and challenging.  The marlin routinely leap out of the water spectacularly, and I caught most of it digitally.  Marlin stripes and the dorsal fin also 'glow' or become quite bright when they are agitated or excited- in the sport fishing, this is referred to as "lit up". We also saw some whales up close on the return trip.  It was a wonderful day for the whole family.
